Looking up a doctor's NPI
Individual clinicians — including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, and others — are assigned a Type 1 (individual) NPI. This lookup shows the public NPPES record for that identifier, including the NPPES-reported name, credential text, and taxonomy (specialty).
The NPPES record is administrative. It does not establish that a doctor holds an active license, is board certified, or participates in any insurance network. Always verify licensure with the appropriate state licensing board.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find a doctor's NPI number?
- Search by the doctor's name plus a city or specialty. The matching public NPI record from CMS NPPES will appear, including the NPPES-reported credential text and taxonomy.
- Does a doctor's NPI prove they are licensed?
- No. An NPI is an administrative identifier. Licensure is verified separately by state medical boards, not by the NPI or NPPES.
- What if I only have the doctor's name?
- Name-only searches are forgiving and will return close matches. Add a city, state, or specialty to narrow the results.
