Ways to search
Dr. NPI Search reads the public CMS NPPES file, so you can find a provider several ways using the NPI lookup:
- By NPI number. If you already have the 10-digit number, type it in to open the record directly — this is the fastest and most certain method.
- By name. Search a clinician's name; add a city or state to narrow common names.
- By organization. Search a hospital, clinic, pharmacy, or agency by its legal business name to find its Type 2 (organization) record.
- By location and specialty. Filter by state, city, and taxonomy (specialty) to browse providers in an area.
Step by step
- Open the lookup and enter the NPI, name, or organization.
- If you searched a name, narrow by state and city using the filters.
- Open the matching result to view the full public record.
- Confirm the 10-digit NPI, entity type, taxonomy, and practice location match the provider you mean.
- Note the "last updated from CMS" date shown on the record.
Reading the result
A record shows the provider or organization name, whether it is an individual or an organization, the self-reported specialty, the NPPES practice and mailing addresses, and the dates the record was created and last updated. For a full breakdown of each field, see what an NPI record shows.
What checking an NPI does not do
Finding a provider's NPI confirms that the identifier exists in the public registry. It does not confirm that the provider holds an active license, is board certified, is in good standing, participates in any insurance plan, or is accepting patients. To verify those, check the primary sources — the state licensing board, the certifying body, and the provider's office or your insurer.
